Fake Blood Development
My main task for The Skylight Music Theatre's 2017 production of Sweeney Todd, was to work on the development of the blood recipe and the rigs worn by the actors for the death scenes in the show. Our blood recipe needed to be be completely washable and have the correct color and consistency of blood. My first attempt involved water, glycerin, and washable tempra paint; it turned out that the paint was less washable than it claimed to be. My next attempt, which ended up being the recipe that we used was achieved with glycerin, blue laundry detergent, powdered food coloring, and Hershey's chocolate syrup. I worked on an under-the-arm pouch for our actors to wear under their costumes, but we ended up using blood pouches and latex tubing sewn into the shave aprons.
