Witchdoctor Character

Independent Costume Design and Construction

Continuing Project; 2013-2015

Concept:

This character was something that I came up with to attend the local Renaissance Faire.  I was inspired by Tia Dalma from the Pirates of the Carribean movies as well as the surplus of supplies and trinkets that I had accumulated from Rendezvous and flea markets.  I first designed and built the costume in 2013 and have continued to add to and tweak the design.  In that sense, this is a continuing project that will never be quite complete.

Most of the pieces were found or purchased and tweaked to better fit the desired style.  The skirt and underblouse are articles purchased from a second hand store and were distressed and dyed using a mixture of teas and coffee.  The wig was a simple grey wig purchased from a party store.  I used a variety of techniques to create the dreadlocks in the wig and added feathers, beads, and lashings as I worked.
